Using a pastel palette

Pastels are defined by lightness, not hue — any color qualifies once it is lifted toward white — which makes them the rare theme where a full rainbow can coexist without clashing, because the shared paleness does the harmonizing. That same paleness is the central design problem: no pastel passes WCAG contrast as a text color or under white text, so every pastel system secretly depends on a dark ink — charcoal or near-black — that never appears in the swatch strip. The register is soft and approachable: baby products, weddings, skincare, bakeries, and Gen-Z social graphics all draw on it. Watch print runs specifically; pastels sit close to paper-white, and on uncoated stock a blush pink can vanish entirely. Give pastel layouts generous darkness somewhere — type, photography, line work — or the whole page floats away.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my pastel palette fail accessibility checks?

Because pastels live at 80-92 percent lightness, they can never reach the 4.5:1 contrast ratio body text requires against white, and white text on pastel fails just as badly. Treat pastels strictly as backgrounds and fills, and add a dark charcoal for all type.

Do pastel colors work in print?

Yes, but proof carefully: pastels sit only a few percent away from paper white, and uncoated or absorbent stock can swallow that gap so the color barely registers. Ask your printer for a hard proof on the actual stock rather than trusting the screen preview.

How many pastel hues can one design carry?

More than you would expect — five or six distinct hues can share a layout because the uniform lightness harmonizes them. The scheme falls apart when one swatch drops in lightness and jumps forward, so keep every pastel within a tight lightness band and let the dark ink color be the only exception.
