Using a midnight palette

Midnight palettes live below 25 percent lightness in the blue-violet band, and their first duty is to stay distinguishable from plain black — the blue undertone is the entire theme. This is the native palette of dark-mode interfaces, and the discipline that governs them applies: never use pure black as the base (elevation shadows disappear against it), and never use pure white for text (the contrast is harsh enough to cause halation on OLED screens — use a blue-tinted off-white around 85 percent lightness instead). Luxury, astronomy, sleep products, and late-night entertainment brands all draw on the register. Depth comes from tiny lightness steps: 8, 12, 16, 20 percent panels layered like a night sky. One bright accent — a star gold or signal cyan — is worth more here than anywhere, because everything else is whispering.

Frequently asked questions

Should a midnight palette use pure black?

No — pure black kills the theme twice over. It erases the blue undertone that distinguishes midnight from generic dark, and in interface work it prevents shadow-based elevation from showing, since nothing renders darker than the background. Start around 8-10 percent lightness with a visible blue cast.

What text color works on midnight backgrounds?

A cool off-white around 85-90 percent lightness with a hint of the background blue. Pure white on very dark grounds produces a glare and ghosting effect, particularly on OLED displays and for readers with astigmatism, and slightly tinted text also feels more cohesive.

How do I create depth in an all-dark palette?

Stack small lightness increments — panels at roughly 8, 12, 16, and 20 percent — so layers separate the way moonlit surfaces do. Saturation can rise slightly on the lighter layers, and a single bright accent color gains outsized power against the quiet field.
